Fort Macleod is a vibrant town in southern Alberta, positioned between the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and the vast expansive prairies. Their beautiful outdoor swimming pool is used to host many events including their annual triathlon. Given their hot summer climate the city wanted to achieve functional shade and maximize the space available in two different areas around the pool.
In the area adjacent to the Kid’s Pool, the city wanted to provide maximum shade but had very little room for footings. A framed shade structure was used in this case due to the need for less extensive footings compared to a conventional spanned shade structure. Although the footings were less extensive, proper engineering was still a major consideration in order to accommodate for wind lift in the area.
In the area adjacent to the main pool, the city wanted to ensure the posts were clear of the area where the customers walk and sit (and in the case of the triathlon, run!). A Modular Cantilever Structure was used as an unobtrusive solution while providing maximum amounts of shade. The sectional nature of the structure also leaves room for expansion in years to come.
