How to Order a Roman Shade

  • 1 — Anchor Points

The first step in ordering your Roman Shade is ensuring that your intended anchoring points are strong enough to receive the Anchor Hardware.

At least 3” of substance (wood) is required to hold a screw eye.

The strength of a metal structure can vary based on size and type. Please contact us to discuss.

  • 2 — Measure

Accurately measure the distance between the anchor points where your Roman Shade will extend and retract. Please also measure the width of the structure to calculate the width of your Roman Shade/s. Keep in mind that our maximum width is 8’8”.

  • 3 — Choose Your Colour

We have over 33 of your favourite colours in stock! Check them out and choose one. We know this is the tough part.

FAQ

What are my Roman Shade width limitations?

The maximum width that our Roman Shades are produced in is 8’8”.

This is the total, actual width after creases and hardware are taken into account. We can cut your Roman Shades to any width as long as it’s less than 8’8”. This does not pertain to the lengths of our Roman Shades, which in reality don’t have a limit. The longer we make these Roman Shades, the more support would be needed as the weight of the shades would surpass the strength of the tension in the cabling system that supports the Roman Shades. Ideally, anything longer than 20 ft would need support midway to ensure the cabling system remains under tension.

How much substance do I need for my anchor hardware?

With Roman Shades, we provide you with all the tensioning as well as anchoring hardware. This means your system is ready-to-fly when it arrives at your door. The anchoring hardware that is provided to you are our welded screw eyes (8x80mm). These screw eyes have a 3” thread on them - which means you need at least 3” of substance to anchor the entire screw eye in. Add an extra inch to that if you’d like the screw eye to sit flush against the anchoring point.

Please let us know if you need to substitute anchors that will work with a metal structure in place of the screw eyes.

How do I know how much droop my Roman Shades will have?

The width of the panels that make up the length of our Roman Shades are produced in 2 ft widths - as a standard. We can add as many of these 2 ft in order to make up the desired length of Roman Shade. Because of this, you can expect to have about 8” of droop in your Roman Shades. If you have an extra panel in your system (meaning you’ve installed a 12’ Roman Shade in a 10 ft space) you can expect to have slightly more droop - around 10”.

Do I need my space to be perfectly square when measuring for my Roman Shade?

It certainly is ideal to install the perimeter cabling system of our Roman Shades in a square or rectangular formation. You can install this square system in an area that is not perfectly square but you should then expect there to be gaps between the cabling system and the structure in which you wish to install it. We don’t recommend this method. If you have an unorthodox space, rather have a conversation with one of our Shade Architects and make use of our free consultation service.

Great product

I ordered these Roman shades because my backyard gets pounded by the sun all afternoon in the summer. I don't start getting shade from my tree until late afternoon/early evening, so the pergola gets very hot.

I had installed some shade sails by this same company at work, so I knew they made a good product.

I contacted them using the website, asking for some swatches so I could look at colours in person. Within a week I had a handful of them and we picked out the colour we liked.
I ordered them on a Sunday and they were delivered the next Monday, so super fast.
I did the install myself, and it was fairly simple. The hardest part was actually hanging the shades, but that still only took about 5 minutes. With another ladder and another person it would've taken 1.
I also ordered the pulley system and it works perfectly. I had to adjust the positioning of the loop on the rope a bit but that wasn't a big deal.
Highly recommended. Fantastic product!

Hi Mike, thanks for taking the time to share your experience! Nice work on the install, looks terrific!

Grate product under unususal circumstances.

The materials are top flight and service were excellent especially given that my particular requirements were unusual. I am very satisfied on both counts.
My house has a gable roof facing the deck and a traditional installation would cut across an arched window above the picture window. I wanted a pair of roman shades that would follow the roof line and retract up under the soffits. At the far side the shade needed to be attached to a horizontal frame. As a result, the shades would have both a slope and a twist.
While the Shade Sail Canada had no experience with particular arrangement, they were very helpful providing answers to the many detailed questions I raised to try to determine whether this installation would work.

Installing the cables was straightforward and followed the instructions provided even with the unusual layout. Working out a system to retract the shades required some experimentation to address what were unanticipated complications that this design raised. The single attachment point for the retracting lines in the center of the shade did not work properly in part because the shade tended to fall to the lower side and in part because the upper cable was 7" longer than the lower one. The solution was to install two retracting lines on each sail - one on each side. That gives total control for retraction and holds the shade firmly in place once retracted. It also allows the shades to be tensioned when deployed with the resulting flat cover that I prefer to the scalloped look.
Retracting the shade up a slope obviously adds to the effort required to retract the shade but it is still very doable. I made a tensioning handle from a piece of wood and a clam cleat to give me greater purchase when tightening the shade in both the extended and retracted positions. My wife is small and she can do it if she needs to.

The other complication was that if you attach the retracting lines to the outboard pully, the pully housing pinches the cable when being retracted making retraction just about impossible, I ended up replacing the last pully with two shackles that slide up the cable without difficulty. I also put a swivel hanger at the end of each line to address the problem of the line twisting and developing curls and knots.
One other thing to mention is that with this arrangement, all of the lines are installed above the shade rather than below as is the usual case. This makes for an uncluttered view from underneath.
I installed the cables so that the shades would be 3" apart. That was barely enough as the shades tend to sag toward the higher cables when deployed. When retracted the bottom of the scallops overlap at the center as well. To avoid that the shades would need to be separated more. I chose to live with them overlapping as I preferred not to have a large gap between them.
In the end the shade is doing exactly what we hoped. It extends out 16' from the house, retracts relatively easily back under the soffits where it is held securely and can be tensioned to be flat when extended. Importantly for me the arched window remains unblocked.

Amazing Graham! Ingenious solution, happy to hear it's doing the trick!

We are enjoying our Roman shades. High quality fabric and hardware look like they will last, especially with the included storage bag for the off season. Responsive customer service. The only place for improvement is that the install instructions could use some diagramsthe actual installation wasnt difficult, but it was a bit tricky to understand with only words, and having to look up the names of a bunch of parts.
